Wow, what an awesome way to announce the arrival of the Southern California high school football season!!!

What’s that?  You say that it hasn’t started?  Well, for those of you that were lucky enough to be able to attend the Saugus “Under the Lights” tournament you know that the high school football season has started and is off with a bang!

Sure, they didn’t have pads, the big uglies stayed home, and the running game was non-existent but there was a fair amount of contact and PLENTY of excitement in this growing tournament in Central Park out in Santa Clarita.

From day one we knew we were in for a treat when traditional powerhouses Long Beach Poly and Oaks Christian met on Friday night.  The park filled with plenty of onlookers trying to get a sneak peek at what these two teams will offer come September.  And the two teams did not disappoint.  Oaks Christian came out smoking hot only to have Long Beach Poly come back and tie them.  Yeah, that’s right, it ended in a tie, it was the first round of the tournament, but you’ll be lucky to watch a better game come Fall.

In the end, in a surprise to many at the tournament, Westlake High put on a show to win the passing tournament, beating out Long Beach Poly after Poly had eliminated Oaks Christian in the semifinals.  While it didn’t appear that Westlake had the athletes to stay with Long Beach Poly, they showed off their sophisticated passing attack to come out on top.

Congrats to Westlake for taking the tournament, and thanks to all the other teams for coming out to the tournament and giving us football junkies our much needed fix!!
